Horse Sale Photography Tips

***Here are a few tips on taking the best photographs and videos of your animal! It is an essential step in making the best first impression to potential buyers!***

1. Groom your horse- This step can make a huge difference in the first impression in photographs. Brushing out the mane and tail, and removing mud and tangles can do the trick!

2. Take conformation shots first- You've groomed your horse, so it makes sense to go ahead and set your horse up in a halter or bridle that is properly fitting before you go for a ride and make any sweat marks. You can also take conformation pictures saddled, but it's always a good idea to present the animal unsaddled.

3. Take pictures in flattering light- The best time of day for pictures is about 2 to 3 hours before sunset. You get the warm "golden hour" effect and can avoid the harsh sunlight of the mid-afternoon. You should keep the sun behind you with the horse square in front of you. Avoid harsh shadows from yourself or the animal.

4. Find a nice flat area without distracting background- A driveway, roadway, or even a flat open pasture makes a good area to take conformation pictures. Positioning legs squarely, with all 4 legs showing is most flattering. The legs at the forefront of the shot should be square under the body and the 2 legs on the back of the shot should be slightly underneath. The horse should be looking forward, hopefully with an alert expression with their ears forward.

5. Shoot from the animals level- You may have to crouch or kneel to find the right angle, however, this very important step can make a huge difference on the size your animal appears.

***We can provide names of professional equine photographers if you would like to have someone do this part for you!***
